LLC: Share a quote that helps you stay grounded …

DL: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the staircase”- Martin Luther King, Jr.

LLC: What is your philosophy for dealing with failure and overcoming obstacles in life?

DL: Plan A all the way! There are no guarantees in life so why have a back-up plan? It’s not like God comes down and says “if you do plan B I will make sure your mortgage is paid and you have health insurance.” With that, just put all your eggs in one basket! Your goals and dreams will change as you grow because you will want them to change not because you compromised your path. Failure is not an option.

LLC: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?

DL: Get a cup of coffee and go through my emails that come in from overnight in other territories.

LLC: What’s your favorite thing to eat or drink that gives you energy?

DL: Coffee.

LLC: How often do you squeeze a workout into your life? What's your favorite form of exercise?

DL: Exercise is very important to me. I work out 5 to 6 days a week....very early in the morning by 6am or 7am, latest. My workouts consist of 4 to 5 SoulCycle spin classes per week, even when I travel, and Pilates.

LLC: Tell us about your relationship with your smart phone?

DL: I put it on silent overnight. It does not stay by my bed unless I am traveling.

LLC: How do you deal with email?

DL: At times it's very hard for me to keep up with the enormous amount of emails I get on a daily basis. In the mornings when I first get up and before I go work out, I check all my emails that have come in from the evening after 9pm and overnight. After that- I try to check them throughout the day, periodically. In addition, people in my office will alert me to something that is urgent because a lot of times someone in my office is also copied.

LLC: What is your secret productivity tip?

DL: If something is going to take two minutes or less then I stop what I am doing and do it. People don’t realize that letting all the little things pile up will just bog you down in the quicksand. In addition, eating right and taking care of myself can increase my productivity immensely! When I feel good about myself I become very efficient. In addition, its contagious!

LLC: What’s your favorite technology or app?

DL : My favorite technologies are the interactive digital streaming apps and all the services like Spotify, Napster, Apple Music, and Tidal. There are still some kinks that need to be worked out. For example, the royalty payments to music creators are too low but that is largely due to our outdated copyright laws in the U.S. and consent decrees governing ASCAP and BMI which were enacted over 70 years ago and which haven’t been updated since before the iPod was developed.

In addition, these services still have to figure out how to credit and provide attribution to all the music creators and other people who have worked on the music. With vinyl albums and CDs, we can just look at all the liner notes and see the lyrics, who wrote all the songs, who produced and engineered the record, what equipment and instrument type the artist used and other information. Because 51% of all recorded music sales is now streaming (and going up!), providing the user with the music credits is one area that the technologies have not perfected and they need to. My other new favorite app is Waze.

LLC: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

DL: Don’t major in music, don’t go to law school, and don’t open your own law firm. Jeez…. Glad I didn’t listen!!Seriously, the best advice I have ever been given is when I am told “no, you cannot do that” or “no, that can’t be done.” It ends up motivating me and I end up doing it. In fact, this became a central theme in my TED talk. Click HERE to see my Ted Talk.

LLC: What song lifts you up in any situation and makes you feel limitless?

DL: There are so many to name! Currently is "Work Bitch" by Britney Spears LOL

LLC: Name a book that changed your life and why?

DL: The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous because it provided me with the tools for living.

LLC: What's your best tip for balancing work, family and personal relationships?

DL:Having your priorities in place. Once you define your priorities, everything just falls into place. For me, a lot of my personal relationships developed over work related situations so I am blessed in that I have a lot of synergy in my life. In this stage in my career and where I am in my life - I get to work with many of my close friends and even sometimes my wife!

The big balancing act comes into play with family. I have to put family first and make sure I have enough quality, uninterrupted time for family. This takes slot of planning and a lot of people whom help me. The key in balancing everything and making it all work is taking care of myself.

LLC: What is your definition of a limitless life?

DL: In Deepak Chopra’s “7 Spiritual Laws of Success” he says when you reach your dharma you know how have achieved your purpose in life. I am clear what my purpose in life is now... a wife and mother, an activist, and an attorney. If I won the lottery today, I would not change much of my daily routine.

There are three parts to finding your dharma or purpose in life....the first one is to discover our true self. The second is to express our unique talents, and the third part is to be of service and help people. When we help others, we help ourselves more. My definition of a limitless life is doing what you love, being healthy, loving and being loved, and being self -sufficient through your own contributions.

LLC: What is your spirit animal?

DL: Lion

LLC: What is your secret productivity tip?

ES: Well, that would be a habit that has traveled with me since high school. Back then I used to plan by day in a Franklin Covey. I would make a list of everything I wanted to accomplish in a 12 month period, then break it down into months, weeks, and micro it down to days. It helped me multitask, and stay focused. This is a habit that I continue, only now I map my day digitally.
